Guest playing can be a great opportunity for your child, but it requires preparation. Use this checklist to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
Before You Commit
Verify Tournament Details
- • Tournament name, location, and dates
- • Age group and competition level
- • Number of games guaranteed
- • Travel distance and logistics
Understand the Cost
- • Guest spot fee (typically $200-$800)
- • What's included (uniform, meals, hotel?)
- • Payment schedule and refund policy
- • Additional costs (travel, lodging, food)
Meet the Coach
- • Schedule a phone or video call
- • Ask about playing time expectations
- • Discuss your child's position and role
- • Confirm practice schedule (if any)
Paperwork & Documentation
Player Registration
- • US Soccer player card or registration number
- • Birth certificate (copy)
- • Proof of insurance
- • Guest player release form (from your primary team)
Medical & Liability
- • Medical release form
- • Emergency contact information
- • List of allergies and medications
- • Liability waiver (signed by parent/guardian)
Tournament-Specific
- • Tournament registration form
- • Hotel rooming list (if staying with team)
- • Travel consent form (for minors)

What to Pack
Soccer Gear

Day-Of Checklist
Arrive Early
- • Get to the field 45 minutes before kickoff

- • Meet the other players and parents
- • Confirm uniform number and position
During the Tournament
- • Stay with the team between games
- • Follow the coach's instructions
- • Be a good teammate (cheer, encourage, support)
- • Respect referees and opponents
Red Flags to Watch For
- • Coach refuses to provide a written agreement
- • Payment required upfront with no refund policy
- • No clear communication about playing time
- • Team has a history of last-minute cancellations
- • Coach can't provide references from other guest players
